The European elections in the United Kingdom in 1984 took place on June 14, 1984. It was part of the 1984 European elections , the second direct election to the European Parliament . In the UK , 81 of the 434 MEPs were elected.

Electoral system

The voting system was identical to the 1979 election . Of the 81 mandates, 78 in England, Wales and Scotland were awarded in single-electoral constituencies according to relative majority voting, similar to the right to vote in the British House of Commons . The three mandates for Northern Ireland were given in an electoral constituency with single transferable voting.

Election result

At 33%, voter turnout was just above the 1984 election.

As a result, the opposition Labor recorded a slight increase in votes, which led to 15 additional votes. The ruling Conservative Tories remained the strongest party. The alliance of SDP and Liberals achieved third place with 19.5%, albeit with a significantly lower percentage than in the 1983 general election . In addition, she was unable to win a mandate due to the majority vote.

Otherwise, only the Scottish National Party (SNP) could win a mandate in Great Britain . As in 1979, the three seats in Northern Ireland went to DUP, UUP and SDLP.
