British General Election 1935
The British general election in 1935 took place on November 14, 1935. The deputies of the lower house (House of Commons) were elected.
It was the last election before World War II . During the war (as in 1914 to 1918) there were no general elections. After the war ended , a new lower house was elected .
Electoral system, new parties
The majority vote was used . There was no threshold clause .
- The Independent Labor Party had been affiliated with the Labor Party for decades. In 1932 she had separated from Labor and was now running completely independently.
Election result
The Conservative Party won the election , although it suffered heavy losses. But it still achieved a clear absolute majority with 387 out of 615 seats. The Labor Party was able to catch up after its defeat in 1931 and increase its share of the vote; Labor won over 100 constituencies more than in 1931.
The new House of Commons elected Stanley Baldwin as the new Prime Minister; this formed a national government .
