Independent Republican

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under the Independent Republican ( Irish poblachtach neamhspleách , dt. Independent Republican ), Irish Republicans ran for elections in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland since the 1920s.

The election candidates are mostly members of the Sinn Féin or Irish Republican Army (IRA). These organizations used the title Independent Republican primarily in elections when their organizations were banned or feared that they would have problems registering the elections. The term is also used more generally for candidates for Sinn Féin and in other contexts, or for candidates who have resigned from the above-mentioned organizations, such as Oliver Hughes, the brother of hunger striker Francis Hughes , who is running for the local elections in 2011.

In Northern Ireland, for example, Gerry McGeough and Frank Maguire ran under Independent Republican . Bobby Sands ran under that name during the Irish Hunger Strike in 1981 and won that election out of prison. One month after winning this election, he died on a hunger strike.
