British General Election December 1910
The British general election in December 1910 took place from third place to 19 December 1910 to the Members of the House of Commons to determine new (House of Commons). It was the last British election before the outbreak of the First World War .
background
The House of Commons election in January 1910 resulted in a hung parliament with a stalemate between the Conservative Party and the Liberal Party. Herbert Henry Asquith , the leader of the Liberals, then formed a government with the support of the Irish Parliamentary Party . The blockade of the budget by the House of Lords , which triggered the January election, could not be overcome and so Asquith asked King George V in November 1910 to dissolve the House of Commons and hold new elections in December.
Electoral system and parties
Voting was based on the majority voting system, there was no threshold clause . Compared to the January election, there were no new parties; George Nicoll Barnes replaced Arthur Henderson as Labor Party leader in February .
Outcome of the election
The majority were only minimally shifted by the election compared to January; Asquith remained prime minister. The conflict between the upper and lower houses was defused in August 1911 by the Parliament Act in favor of the lower house.
