The British general election in 1895 was held from 13 July to 7 August 1895, to the Members of the House of Commons to determine new (House of Commons). The result was a Conservative victory .

background

After the resignation of William Ewart Gladstone in 1894, at the explicit request of Queen Victoria , the Liberal Minister Lord Rosebery succeeded him as Prime Minister . Like Gladstone, Rosebery formed a minority government and relied on the support of the Irish Parliamentary Party . In the course of a debate over the supply of cordite to the army , the opposition proposed that the salary of Secretary of War Henry Campbell-Bannerman be cut by £ 100 . The motion was accepted with 132 votes to 125 and taken by Lord Rosebery as a vote of no confidence in his government, so that he resigned on June 22, 1895.

Electoral system and parties

Voting was based on the majority voting system, there was no threshold clause . A total of 1,180 candidates competed, 189 of which were unopposed. Most of them, 132, ran for the Conservatives and Liberal Unionists, 42 for the Irish Parliamentary Party , 11 candidates for the Liberals and 4 other candidates for the supporters of Charles Parnell who had split off from the Irish Parliamentary Party. Of the 670 seats, only 481 were contested.

Outcome of the election

The Conservatives received an absolute majority of the seats and were able to provide the Prime Minister with Lord Salisbury . Salisbury had previously held the office from 1885 to February 1886 and from August 1886 to 1892.

Election result

A total of 6,330,519 people were eligible to vote; the turnout was 78.4%.
