Gains and losses
The early British general election in 1931 took place on October 27, 1931. When choosing the deputies were for the lower house (House of Commons) redefined. The Labor Party lost over 80% of its seats.
Electoral system, new parties
The majority vote was used . There was no threshold clause .
- For the first time, the National Liberal Party (Nationalliberale), founded in 1931 , was a split from the Liberal Party .
- The National Labor Committee , co-founded by Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald in 1931, also appeared for the first time as a National Labor Organization .
- The grouping “ Independent Labor Party ” was still closely connected (“affiliation”) to the Labor Party . In 1932 she will separate from Labor and run completely independently.
Election result
The Conservative Party won an overwhelming election victory and secured a two-thirds majority with 470 out of 615 seats . The Labor Party and the Liberal Party , on the other hand, suffered heavy losses.
A multi-party government of the National Government had been in office since August 1931 ; this model of government was continued after the election. The background was the severe political and economic crises of the time.
