The European elections in the United Kingdom in 1989 took place on June 15, 1989. It was part of the European elections in 1989 , the third direct election of the European Parliament . In the UK , 81 of the 518 MEPs were elected.

Electoral system

The voting system was identical to the 1984 election . Of the 81 mandates, 78 in England, Wales and Scotland were awarded in single-electoral constituencies according to relative majority voting, similar to the right to vote in the British House of Commons . The three mandates for Northern Ireland were given in an electoral constituency with single transferable voting.

Election result

At 36%, the turnout was slightly higher than in the 1989 election, but it was again the lowest in the European Community .

As a result, the opposition Labor was able to record gains of 3.9 percentage points, which led to 13 additional mandates at the expense of the ruling Conservative Tories through majority voting.

The third strongest party was the Greens, which achieved a record result with 14.5% of the vote. However, they couldn't win a constituency. The LibDems resulting from the alliance of SDP and Liberals had arisen, lost 12.6 percentage points compared to the election in 1984. The Scottish National Party (SNP) has defended its sole mandate. As in 1979 and 1984, the three seats in Northern Ireland went to DUP, UUP and SDLP.
