The 1989 European elections in the Netherlands took place on June 15, 1989 as part of the EU-wide election of the European Parliament . The Dutch elected 25 of the 518 members of the European Parliament.
Result
The ruling Christian Democratic CDA was the strongest party ahead of the opposition Social Democratic PvdA. The co-governing liberal VVD lost two of its five seats. The third strongest force was the Regenboog list, made up of four green-left parties. These started in 1984 with a slightly different composition as the Great Progressive Accord . In addition to the joint list of Christian conservative parties, the left-liberal D66 was also able to move into the European Parliament.
