European elections in Germany in 1989
The European elections in Germany in 1989 were the third direct election of 78 German members of the European Parliament . It took place in the context of the EU-wide European elections in 1989 on June 18, 1989. 22 parties and other political associations ran for election .
Three other German MPs were sent from West Berlin . Due to the special status of the area, these were not elected directly, but by the Berlin House of Representatives. After reunification, the German Bundestag also sent 18 observers from the area of the former GDR on February 21, 1991 .
Result
Compared to the 1984 election, turnout rose from 57% to 62%. The Republicans surprisingly moved into the European Parliament. The FDP barely skipped the five percent hurdle after narrowly missing it in 1984.

In West Berlin, one member of the CDU, one member of the SPD and one member of the Alternative List were elected.
After reunification
After German reunification on October 3, 1990, the German contingent in the European Parliament for the 1994 European elections was increased to 99 seats. Until this election, the People's Chamber had sent 18 observers to the European Parliament.
