Partido Humanista

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Partido Humanista (PH), [pɐɾ'tidu umɐ'niʃtɐ] , in English "Humanist Party", is a small Portuguese party . It defines itself as neo-humanist and is part of the humanist movement and the humanist international . The party was founded in 1999 and is currently headed by Luís Filipe Guerra.

In May 1984 the Humanist Movement decided to be politically active in various countries. 1986 saw the first contact between Spanish party activists and Portuguese in order to sound out the possibilities for a Portuguese Humanist Party. However, this was initially given up in 1990 because there were not enough supporters. Since then, various events with humanistic goals have taken place in the Portuguese universities.

At the beginning of 1999 it was again decided to create the legal conditions by March of the same year to found the party and to have it registered with the Portuguese constitutional court. The party was formed in April 1999 in time to take part in the European elections two months later . However, the party did not take part in the election. The first party congress took place on May 27, 2000 at the University of Lisbon .

Since then, the party has participated in all local, regional and state elections in Portugal. Nevertheless, the PH - although it also cooperated with other, independent applicants - has not yet won any mandates. It is hardly noticeable in the political arena, and it is of little importance among the small Portuguese parties.
