Ivari Padar

Ivari Padar (born March 12, 1965 in the village of Navi , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician. From 2002 to 2009 he was chairman of the Estonian Social Democratic Party (SDE). From April 2014 to April 2015, Padar was in the cabinet of Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas, Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Estonia.

Early years

Ivari Padar graduated from Võru Industrial Technology Center in 1984 . After that he was a farmer and carpenter until 1989. In 1991/92 he worked as a primary school teacher in Võru.

In 1993/94 he held the post of Deputy Mayor of Võru. Then he was in 1994/95 chairman of the farmers' union in Võru County . From 1995 to 1997 he was personal assistant to the State Secretary in the Estonian Ministry of Finance. In 1995 he graduated from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Tartu with a degree in history .

politics

In 1999 Ivari Padar joined the predecessor party of today's Estonian Social Democratic Party. After a brief activity in the private sector as managing director of Hansatee Hulgi AS , Ivari Padar was Minister of Agriculture in Prime Minister Mart Laar's cabinet from 1999 to 2002 .

In 2002/03 he worked for AS Tallink Duty Free before he was elected to the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) in 2003 . From 2002 to 2005 he was also chairman of the Võru City Council .

From December 2002 to March 2009 Padar was the successor to Toomas Hendrik Ilves, chairman of the Estonian Social Democratic Party. He was a member of the Estonian Parliament until 2007. During this time he was u. a. Chairman of the Socialist Group.

From 2007 to 2009 Padar was Minister of Finance of the Republic of Estonia in the cabinet of Prime Minister Andrus Ansip . After his party's government exit, he was briefly a member of the Estonian Riigikogu in 2009 . In the European elections in the same year he was elected to the European Parliament as a member of the Social Democrats.

In 2014 Ivari Padar resigned from his seat in Strasbourg. From April 7, 2014 to April 9, 2015, he was in the social-liberal coalition government of Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas, Estonian Minister of Agriculture.

After the parliamentary elections in Estonia in 2015 , he returned to the Estonian parliament as a member. From November 7th 2017 he was a member of the European Parliament again (after Marju Lauristin left ). In April 2019, Hannes Hanso took over for him .

Private life

Ivari Padar is married and has a daughter and a son.
