Hannes Hanso (born October 6, 1971 in Nõo ) is an Estonian politician . He was Minister of Defense of the Republic of Estonia from September 14, 2015 to November 23, 2016 .

Life

Hannes Hanso was born in the rural community of Nõo in southwest Estonia. He passed his Abitur in 1989 in Orissaare on the island of Saaremaa . From 1989 to 1991, he studied special education at the University in Tartu . He then went to a farm in Sweden as an intern.

From 1992 to 1994 Hannes Hanso studied law at the University of Tartu, and from 1996 to 1998 Chinese at the Sichuan University in Chengdu .

Since 1998 Hannes Hanso has been a foreign policy commentator on Estonian radio and Radio Free Europe . In the same year he went to England. At the University of West London he first studied transport management, then from 2001 to 2004 development cooperation and political science at the renowned School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) . In 2005 he received his master's degree in Asian Politics.

From 2005 to 2007 Hannes Hanso worked as a consultant in the Estonian Ministry of Defense, then until 2009 in the Estonian Ministry of Finance. From 2009 to 2011 he worked for the European External Action Service (EEAS) in Beijing . From 2011 to 2013 Hanso worked as a research assistant at the International Center for Defense and Security ( Rahvusvahelise Kaitseuuringute Keskuse ) in Tallinn .

politics

In 2009 Hannes Hanso joined the Estonian Social Democratic Party (SDE). From 2013 to 2015 he was the mayor of the city of Kuressaare on the island of Saaremaa.

In the parliamentary elections in March 2015, Hanso was elected as a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). There he was chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. From September 14, 2015 to November 23, 2016, Hanso was Minister of Defense of the Republic of Estonia in the coalition government of Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas . He then returned to the Estonian Parliament as an MP. In September 2018, Hannes Hanso announced that he would no longer run for the next parliamentary election and would withdraw from politics.

In April 2019 he moved up for Ivari Padar as a member of the 8th European Parliament , but, in accordance with his previous announcement, decided not to run for the 2019 European elections.

Private

Hannes Hanso is married to Riina Hanso. The couple have four young children (two boys and two girls). Hannes Hanso also has a son and a daughter from his previous marriage.

He is the older brother of the film producer and author Hille Hanso (* 1976).
