Marju Lauristin (born April 7, 1940 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician and social scientist . From 1992 to 1994 she was Estonian Minister of Social Affairs. In the European elections in 2014 she was elected member of the European Parliament .

Life

Marju Lauristin is the daughter of Johannes and Olga Lauristin . Johannes Lauristin was head of the puppet government established by the Soviets during the first Soviet occupation of Estonia 1940–1941.

Marju Lauristin studied journalism and sociology of mass communication at the Tartu State University and graduated in 1966. In 1976 she did her doctorate in Moscow with a thesis on the content analysis of newspaper articles.

She began her professional career as a journalist for Estonian Radio . From 1970 to 1988 she worked at the Laboratory for Sociology at the State University of Tartu ( Estonian : Tartu Riikliku Ülikooli sotsioloogia laboratoorium ), most recently as its director.

Singing revolution and subsequent years

In 1988 she founded the sign of glasnost and perestroika , together with Edgar Savisaar , the Popular Front of Estonia ( Popular Front ), the first major independent political movement in Estonia since the occupation of the country. From 1990 to 1995 Lauristin was a member of the Estonian Social Democratic Party ( Eesti Sotsiaaldemokraatlik Party ) and also party leader. In 1990 she became Deputy Speaker of Parliament. From October 21, 1992 to September 20, 1994 Lauristin was Estonian Minister of Social Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mart Laar . From 1999 to 2003 she sat for the Social Democratic People's Party - The Moderates ( Rahvaerakond Mõõdukad ) in the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ).

From 1995 to 1999 Lauristin returned to the university and worked as a professor of social policy in Tartu. From 2003 she was a professor for social communication. She has now retired. She has been a member of the Council of the United Nations University since 2004 , and is also involved in numerous international scientific publications and institutions. In 2006 the University of Helsinki awarded her an honorary doctorate.

MEP

In the 2014 European elections , Marju Lauristin was elected to the European Parliament for the Social Democrats . As one of six MEPs from Estonia, she was a member of Parliament until her voluntary retirement at the end of 2017. Ivari Padar was her successor .

Private

Marju Lauristin has been the wife of the Estonian sociologist Peeter Vihalemm (* 1944) since 1978 . She is the half-sister of the Estonian politician and publicist Jaak Allik (* 1946).
