Jaak Allik (born October 8, 1946 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician, publicist and theater director.

Life, theater, politics

Jaak Allik was born as the son of the communist Estonian politicians Hendrik Allik (1901–1989) and Olga Lauristin (1903–2005). He graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1963. Allik graduated from the History Faculty of Tartu State University ( Tartu Riiklik Ülikool ) in 1972 . From 1973 to 1977 he was employed there as a lecturer in history.

From 1977 to 1981 Jaak Allik was Head of Theater Unit in the Ministry of Culture of the Estonian SSR . He then was editor-in-chief of the magazine Teater from 1981 to 1983 . Muusika. Movie theater. Allik was artistic director of the Ugala Theater in Viljandi from 1983 to 1988 and its director from 1991 to 1995. In 1987 Allik was awarded the Honored Artist of the Estonian SSR.

Before the fall of the Wall, Jaak Allik made a career within the Communist Party of Estonia (EKP). In 1988 he was First Deputy Chairman of the Cultural Committee of the Estonian SSR, from 1988 to 1990 First Secretary of the EKP in Viljandi District. In 1991 Allik resigned from the EKP after twenty years of membership and joined the Estonian Coalition Party ( Eesti Koonderakond ), of which he was a member until 2002.

From 1990 to 1992 Allik was a member of parliament of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia and from 1992 to 1995 a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). From April 1999 to November 1999 Jaak Allik was Minister without Portfolio in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Tiit Vähi , then from January 1996 to March 1997 Minister of Culture of the Republic of Estonia in the Cabinet Vähi II . He held the same office from March 1997 to March 1999 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mart Siimann .

After leaving the government, Allik was deputy mayor of the city of Viljandi in 1999/2000 and was elected chairman of the Estonian Theater Association ( Eesti Teatriliit ) in 2000. In 2003 he was elected as a member of the Estonian Parliament on the list of the Estonian People's Union ( Eestimaa Rahvaliit ). He held his mandate until 2007.

Private life

Jaak Allik is married. He has a son and two daughters.
