Others

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under Miscellaneous (also Miscellaneous , Miscellaneous , Miscellanea ) are used in the classification classified things that are not in the normal categories of a category scheme fit.

The term is used, for example, as a chapter heading for content in books, newspapers or other publications that cannot be assigned to any other category .

A discussion of content under "Other" may be due to the fact that

  • an own category would be too sparsely filled according to the criteria of the given system,
  • assignment to several main categories would be possible.

If the power of the collective category “Other” becomes too great compared to the normal categories, the classic scheme should be revised. Unspecific categories usually lead to a watering down of the classification and to a hit rate that is too low for keyword searches, as the proportion of false negative hits increases. However, there is also the opinion that the classic - usually mono-hierarchical - classification systems are outdated and everything can be classified under “Other”, since one thing can easily be assigned to several categories in digital indexing systems. Semantic networks or similar polyhierarchies , which do not exclude multiple keywording from the outset, represent an alternative to these classification systems and an aid against collective categories that are becoming too large .
