Siiri Oviir (born  Tavel (Davel) ; born November 3, 1947 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician. From 2004 to 2014 she was a member of the European Parliament .

Early years

After graduating from high school in Tallinn in 1966, Siiri Oviir studied law at the University of Tartu from 1969 to 1975 . From 1972 to 1975 she worked at the Ministry of Justice of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic and from 1975 to 1990 at the Supreme Court.

With the regaining of Estonian independence, Siiri Oviir went into politics. From 1990 to 1992 she was Minister of Social Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Edgar Savisaar . From 1992 to 1995 Oviir was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) before she was again Minister for Social Affairs from April to November 1995. She was a member of Parliament from 1995 to 2002, and from 1999 she was Deputy Speaker. From January 2002 to March 2003 she was again Minister of Social Affairs.

From 2003 to 2004, Oviir Member of Parliament before it in the 2004 European elections for the Estonian Center Party ( Eesti Keskerakond ) as deputies in the European Parliament was elected. In the 2009 election she was able to successfully defend her parliamentary mandate in Strasbourg. In 2012 Oviir left the Center Party and left the European Parliament in the 2014 election.

From 1989 to 1996 she was a co-founder and board member of the Estonian Women's Association. Siiri Oviir has been the chairman of the Estonian Disabled Sports Federation since 1991.

Private life

Siiri Oviir is married to Mihkel Oviir , President of the Estonian Court of Auditors. She has three daughters. Her daughter Liisa Oviir (* 1977) was Minister for Foreign Trade and Entrepreneurship of the Republic of Estonia from 2015 to 2016.
