Martin helmets
Martin Helme (born April 24, 1976 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician . Since July 2020 he has been chairman of the Eesti Konservatiivne Rahvaerakond .
Life
Martin Helme was born in 1976 to Mart (* 1949) and Sirje Helme (* 1949) in the capital of the then Estonian SSR . After graduating from school, he attended the University of Tartu . He completed his history studies there in 2000. He then worked for the Baltic news portal Delfi from 2004 to 2007 .
politics
Martin Helme joined a predecessor party of today's Eesti Konservatiivne Rahvaerakond (EKRE) in 2006 . In 2012, this merged into the national conservative EKRE, whose chairman Martin's father Mart Helme was elected. In the 2015 parliamentary elections , Martin Helme moved into the Estonian parliament ( Riigikogu ) for his party and subsequently assumed the chairmanship of the parliamentary group.
After the 2019 election , EKRE became part of the new coalition government under Jüri Ratas , which was sworn in on April 29, 2019. In the Ratas II cabinet , Helme took over the post of Finance Minister of the Republic of Estonia.
As a vacation replacement for his father, who is a government minister of the interior, he caused a scandal in the summer of 2019 when he tried to fire the head of the police and border protection office. A decision that was not coordinated with the Prime Minister and the other ministers, although the appointment and dismissal of the head of the agency must be borne by the entire government.
Private
Helme is married and has five children.
In addition to his father, his cousin, the writer Peeter Helme (* 1978), is one of his best-known relatives.
