Peeter Helme (born September 6, 1978 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian writer, literary critic and translator.

Life

Peeter Helme was born the son of the Estonian military historian Rein Helme (1954–2003). He studied history , art history and theology in Tartu , Göttingen and Berlin . In Göttingen he became a member of Corps Teutonia-Hecynia.

Helme initially worked at the Eesti Instituut as an editor and freelance writer. He has mainly dealt with political philosophies of the 20th century and German literary history. He has also made a name for himself as a translator of specialist historical literature.

Since 2007, Helme has appeared regularly with literature programs on the radio. From 2010 to 2014 he was a literary critic for the Estonian weekly newspaper Eesti Ekspress . From January 2014 to January 2019 he worked as an editor for literature and moderator at the Estonian public broadcaster , since January 2019 he has been the department head of the Estonian daily newspaper Postimees .

From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the Estonian Social Democracy .

Peeter Helme has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Estonian Writers' Union since 2012 .
