Margus Leivo (2010)

Margus Leivo (born May 28, 1954 in Räpina ; † August 21, 2019 ) was an Estonian politician . He was Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Estonia from 2003 to 2005 .

Life and politics

Margus Leivo attended school in Räpina in southern Estonia from 1961 to 1972. He then studied engineering from 1977 to 1982 at the Polytechnic Institute in the Estonian capital Tallinn .

From 1985 to 1990 he was responsible for building work in rural Estonia. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the looming regain of Estonian independence, Leivo went into politics. From 1990 to 1993 he was the District Administrator of Põlva County . From 1993 to 1999 Leivo was State Secretary in the Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and from 1999 to 2002 State Secretary in the Estonian Ministry of Transport. In December 2002 he joined the agrarian Estonian People's Union ( Eestimaa Rahvaliit ).

In the cabinet of Prime Minister Juhan Parts, Leivo was Interior Minister from April 2003 to April 2005.

From 2005 to 2007 Leivo was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). In 2007 Leivo resigned from the People's Union after failing to return to the Riigikogu in the parliamentary elections due to a lower position on the list.

Leivo then headed the University Administration of Tallinn University of Technology (TTÜ).

Private life

Margus Leivo was married. He had a daughter and two sons.
