history

Räpina Church

The Räpina region served in ancient times as a trade route between Tartu and Pihkva and Tartu– Võhandu . The actual founding date of the place is not known. From 1582 there is a document which identifies Räpina and many neighboring towns as a trading post in the Tartu region. Presumably these settlements joined together to form the parish Räpina, which was mentioned as a parish in a document of the Swedish Royal Consistory in 1636 .

Between the 1930s and 1992 the rural community Räpina belonged to the ESSR . With the state independence of Estonia, Räpina finally achieved the status of a self-governing city . In 2002, the city and the municipality of Räpina merged and formed what is now the municipality of Räpina.

The inhabitants of Räpina operated and operated agriculture, fishing and wood processing.

Culture and sights

The proximity to Lake Peipus , the Lämmijärv, Meelva and Viroste lakes and the Võhandu River attract numerous nature lovers every year. The protected area in the Meelva moor is particularly worth seeing. The 39 m meteorite crater of Tsõõrikmäe is also interesting.
