Leonhard Lapin (born December 29, 1947 in Räpina , Estonian SSR , Soviet Union ) is an Estonian architect and artist.

Life and art

Leonhard Lapin graduated from secondary school in Räpina in 1965. From 1966 to 1971 he studied architecture at the State Art Institute of the Estonian SSR ( Estonian ENSV Riiklik Kunstiinstituut ) in Tallinn . From 1971 to 1974 Lapin worked as an architect for the restoration authority of the Estonian capital. He has been a member of the Estonian Association of Artists ( Eesti Kunstnike Liit ) since 1977 and of the Estonian Association of Architects ( Eesti Arhitektide Liit ) since 1982 .

From 1990 Lapin was a lecturer at the Estonian Art Academy ( Eesti Kunstiakadeemia ), since 1995 with the title of professor. From 1991 to 1993 he was editor-in-chief of the magazine Ehituskunst ("Baukunst").

Leonhard Lapin became known in the 1970s primarily for his drawings and graphics, but also for his interactions between man and machine. As a leading representative of the Estonian avant-garde, he quickly rose to great fame in the Soviet Union , but also in the entire Baltic region. He also performed the first happenings and performances in Estonia.

Lapin publishes poetry under the pseudonym Albert Trapeež . A poem has been published in German in a translation by Gisbert Jänicke .

He has been an avowed Buddhist since the 1980s .

Awards

In 1989 Leonhard Lapin was awarded the Kristjan Raud Prize . In 1997 he received the Culture Prize of the Republic of Estonia.
