Gisbert Jänicke (born March 19, 1937 in Ziegelhausen ) is a German translator from Finnish , Swedish and Estonian .

Life

Jänicke trained as a bookseller and has lived in Finland since 1957. Here he worked in the book trade until 1978, since then he has lived as a freelance translator in Helsinki. He is married to the translator Raija Jänicke , who translates from German and Swedish into Finnish.

Jänicke translates poetry as well as prose and factual texts, with a slight emphasis on poetry, although the author himself emphasized cautiously: "I don't prefer poetry, but I love it" What is striking, however, are his numerous translations by Paavo Haavikko and for example the new translation of the Kalevala .

In particular, Jänicke has also rendered outstanding services to the translation of Estonian poetry. He was a regular contributor to the magazine estonia , for which he published a selection of an Estonian poet in German translation in almost every issue from 1992 to 2004. In this way Artur Alliksaar (1/1994), Betti Alver (1/1992), Contra (2/2002), Andres Ehin (2/1996), Kristiina Ehin (2004), Jaan Kaplinski (1/1999), Doris Kareva (1/1998), Jaan Kross (1/1995), Hasso Krull (2/2001), Ilmar Laaban (2/2000), Leonhard Lapin (1/2003), Viivi Luik (2/1999), Ene Mihkelson (2/1995), Ellen Niit (2/1998), Tõnu Õnnepalu (1/1996), Kristian Jaak Peterson (1/2001), Paul-Eerik Rummo (2/1997), Mats Traat (2/1994), Debora Vaarandi (1/1993), Mari Vallisoo (2/2003), Elo Viiding (1/2002), Juhan Viiding (1/1997) sample poems in German.
