Jaan Kaplinski (born January 22, 1941 in Tartu ; † August 8, 2021 ) was an Estonian writer , poet , translator and philosopher .

Life

Jaan Kaplinski was born in 1941 to an Estonian mother and a Polish father. Both parents were philologists. The father died in the deportation camps of the Soviet Union , to which he was deported during the occupation of Estonia. Jaan Kaplinski first studied linguistics at the University of Tartu . In 1966 he completed his studies in Romance languages . He then worked as a sociologist, translator and writer. Kaplinski quickly gained a reputation as one of the most important poets of Estonian modernism .

From 1974 to 1980 he was responsible for ecology in the Tallinn Botanical Garden .

1983 to 1988 he was a lecturer in international literature and translation at the University of Tartu. From 1994 he was a member of the Académie Universelle des Cultures . From 1996 to 1997 he was a visiting professor at the University of Tampere . In 1997 he was Writer in Residence in Wales ; in the same year he received the Baltic Assembly Prize . For his poetry he received the Juhan Liiv Prize in 1968 and the Juhan Smuul Prize in 1985 .

Jaan Kaplinski was one of the most influential poets in Estonian literature. His often meditative poems draw on, among other things, Eastern philosophy and the spiritual world ( Daoism and Buddhism ). He was also active as an essayist, literary critic and philosopher. Recurring themes for left-wing intellectuals were people under capitalism and the crimes of communist totalitarianism .

From 1965 he published a total of 14 collections of poetry, five collections of essays and some prose works. He also wrote poetry in English, French and Võro .

Jaan Kaplinski also worked as a translator from English , French , Spanish , Swedish and Chinese.

Politician

With the regaining of Estonian independence, Jaan Kaplinski became politically active. From 1992 to 1995 he was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). Although he was originally a member of the Center Party , he resigned from the party in protest against the authoritarian leadership and formed the Liberal-Centrist Group with other independent members of parliament (until 1995). In 2004 he joined the Social Democratic Party ( Eesti Sotsiaaldemokraatlik Erakond ), for which he was a member of the Tartu City Council.

Private life

Jaan Kaplinski was married to the writer Tiia Toomet for the second time and had a daughter and four sons. Kaplinski died in August 2021 after a long illness at the age of 80.
