Gregor Laschen

Gregor Laschen (born May 8, 1941 in Ueckermünde ; † June 2, 2018 in Lingen (Ems) ) was a German poet , writer and editor .

life and work

After graduating from high school in Minden, Gregor Laschen studied modern German literature , philosophy and art history in Kiel , Zurich , Berlin , Würzburg and Bonn . In 1967 he attended the Group 47 meeting. In 1970 he received his doctorate on a subject on GDR poetry. From 1972 to 2002 he was a lecturer in New German Literature at the Dutch University of Utrecht . Laschen initiated the translation project “Poetry of the Neighbors” in 1988, which takes place annually in the Künstlerhaus Edenkoben. In the “Edition Die Horen ” he published 17 volumes of a poetry series with a country focus. He translated the work of the Dutch writer Judith Herzberg . Laschen designed exhibition concepts and worked as a literary critic. He was a member of the PEN Center Germany and the Dutch PEN Center .

Gregor Laschen lived in Utrecht and in the art and culture center Bahnhof Rolandseck until he moved to Bremen in 2008 .

Jammerbugt notate

Laschen received the "Peter Huchel Prize" in 1996 for the volume of poetry Jammerbugt Notate . The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung noted that the jury honored an “outsider work” that “has not yet received a single review”. The decision represents “a veritable discovery that draws attention to a work of disturbing intensity full of moments of resistance”. The poems seem strange and dark, they relate to modern painting in that they deal with images and objects. These bitter fragments were “largely speechless in the face of the criticism, they do not seem to be tamed in the tight space of a review.” Stefan Wieczorek continues: “The 'Jammerbugt-Notate' can also be read as a reread of one's own work. None of the nouns of Laschen's poetry are missing and they all seem to flow into the fragment. "

Neighbors' poetry

Laschen was the founder and long-time director of the European poetry translation project "Poetry of the Neighbors - Poets Translate Poets", organized by the Künstlerhaus Edenkoben and the Arp Museum Foundation . For the "Edition Die Horen" he published numerous anthologies of poetry in which the original text is contrasted with the German adaptation. Each volume is the result of a European poetry meeting. As his successor, Hans Thill heads the project. In Laschen's volume of poetry, Die Leuchttürme Do What They Can , published in 2004 , the author resorted to his project work, for which he had created a network of correspondents over the years with poets and about poetry. He processed observations and reflections and made the leitmotifs of his work visible.
