Jüri Talvet (pseudonym Jüri Perler , born December 17, 1945 in Pärnu ) is an Estonian poet , literary scholar , essayist and translator .

Life

Talvet went to school in Pärnu from 1953 to 1964 and, after completing his military service, studied English philology at the University of Tartu from 1967 to 1972 . Immediately afterwards, he got a job as a lecturer in foreign literature. In 1981 he defended his doctoral thesis on the Spanish poet Mateo Alemán in Leningrad . Since 1992 he has been Professor of World Literature at the University of Tartu.

As part of his studies, he stayed in Cuba for a long time (1979–1980), and also traveled to Spain and Latin America . Talvet has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Association and the Estonian PEN Club since 1984 . He is also u. a. Member of the International Comparative Literature Association and founding member and chairman of the Estonian subdivision Eesti Võrdleva Kirjandusteaduse Assotsiatsioon (“Estonian Association for Comparative Literature”).

The Estonian diplomat, poet and translator Malle Talvet-Mustonen is his sister. Jüri Talvet lives in Tartu.

Scientific work

After completing his studies, Jüri Talvet specialized in Hispanic studies and has primarily appeared as a mediator of Spanish literature in Estonia. In addition, he has also promoted comparative literature in Estonia, among other things by founding the magazine interlitteraria ( ISSN  1406-0701 ), which has been published annually since 1996 and includes articles in English, German, French and Spanish. Talvet has also presented numerous studies on Estonian literature, in particular on Juhan Liiv and Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald's Kalevipoeg .

Literary work

Already in Talvet's debut volume, which mainly contains read-lyrics, a certain proximity to Spanish-language poetry was noted. References to Spanish culture could also be made in his later volumes, even if references were made to the Estonian era of the national awakening in the 19th century and to a poet like Karl Eduard Sööt .

With his other volumes of poetry, the author consolidated his position, so that today he is one of the most recognized contemporary Estonian poets. His essay writing also made important contributions to the cultural discussion in Estonia. His essays on Spain have understandably been compared again and again with the work of Friedebert Tuglas , whose notes from Spain are among the classics of Estonian literature.

Translations

Talvet has translated mainly from Spanish - both poetry and prose - including Francisco de Quevedo , Ramón Gómez de la Serna , Mario Vargas Llosa , Salvador Espriu , Vicente Aleixandre , Pío Baroja , Gabriel García Márquez , Juan José Arreola , Juan Rulfo and José Emilio Pacheco transferred to Estonian. He made some of the translations together with Ain Kaalep and Asta Põldmäe .

Talvet's own work has been published in English and Spanish:

  • Elegia Estonia y otros poemas . Ciudad de València: Palmart 2002. 108 pp.
  • A call for cultural symbiosis . Toronto et al .: Guernica 2005. 133 pp.
  • Estonian Elegy. Selected poems. Toronto et al .: Guernica 2008. 72 pp.
