Kreutzwald commemorative medal
The Kreutzwald Memorial Medal ( Estonian Kreutzwaldi mälestusmedal ) is a symbolic cultural prize awarded to people and institutions that have made scientific or artistic contributions to the life and work of Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald .
Statute
According to the statute adopted in December 1985, the medal is awarded to people who
- Kreutzwald's life, activity and work are presented in public publications, enriched with new facts or treated in an interesting way in terms of literary theory;
- appeared with substantial lectures on Kreutzwald's life, activity and work;
- have created high-quality works of art on the subject of Kreutzwald or his work;
- Have translated Kreutzwald's work.
The medal can also be awarded to people who have supported the Kreutzwald Museum or one of its branches in an outstanding manner. In addition, institutions such as museums, libraries or schools can also receive the medal.
Award
The award ceremony takes place every year on Kreutzwald's birthday, December 14th. The place of the award is the Kreutzwald Museum in Võru . Since 1999, a Kreutzwald scholarship has also been awarded to a high school student.
In the early days, the medal was often awarded to a large number of people, but since the mid-1990s it was usually only awarded to one person. The year 2003 was an exception, when Kreutzwald's 200th birthday was celebrated.
