Gunnar Neeme

Gunnar Neeme (born May 19, 1918 in Tartu , † February 3, 2005 in Melbourne ) was an Estonian artist, book illustrator and writer.

life and work

Gunnar Neeme graduated from high school in Tartu in 1937 and studied with interruptions from 1937 to 1943 at the Pallas Art School . During the German occupation of Estonia in World War II , he fought in the ranks of the Wehrmacht and ended up in Germany at the end of the war, where he continued his art studies in private studios from 1946–1949 and was also a drawing teacher for members of the US Army. In 1949 he emigrated to Australia, where he had lived in Melbourne since 1952.

In addition to Estonian and European art, Neeme particularly valued the contemporary Japanese art of Yasuda Yukihiko and Misao Yokoyama . He worked primarily as a book illustrator and also organized numerous art exhibitions. Best known are his illustrations for the Estonian national epic Kalevipoeg , which he published in 1985 and which were used in 2011 for the bilingual Estonian-English edition. His texts, written both in Estonian and in English, often move at the interface between prose and poetry and have a contemplative-essayistic tone.
