Peeter Lindsaar (to 1935 Lindseer , * June 29 . Jul / 12. July  1906 greg. In Kuldre, Circle Urvaste ; † 6. November 1990 in Sydney ) was an Estonian writer and journalist.

Life

Peeter Lindsaar attended schools in Vastse-Antsla, Otepää and Valga , where he graduated from high school in 1927. After completing his one-year military service, he stayed in the military and opted for an officer career. In 1931 he graduated from the military academy in Tondi as a lieutenant and was then stationed at various locations. From 1937 to 1941 he was also enrolled at the University of Tartu . After the Sovietization of Estonia, like the entire Estonian military, he was incorporated into the Red Army and initially fought on the Soviet side after the German attack on the Soviet Union . In 1941, however, he deserted near Lake Ilmen and went over to the Wehrmacht , which he served as an interpreter from then on. In 1944 he came to Germany , where he was interned in the American zone of occupation until 1946 . He then lived in secret for a while in his wife's room, who worked at the Ansbach hospital , before the couple moved to the British Occupation Zone in the summer of 1947 and then emigrated to Australia in 1948 .

In Australia, Lindsaar first worked in a military hospital and then worked for several years as the editor of an Estonian magazine. From 1955 until his retirement in 1971 he was employed by the State Library of New South Wales in Sydney.

plant

Lindsaar began his writing career in Germany by taking part in a youth literature competition advertised by the most exiles there in the American zone and receiving third prize in 1948 for the text he submitted. The collection of novels The Old Horse was not published until 1950 in Australia as his debut and first Estonian literary book printed in Australia. The stories contained therein were later compared to Oskar Luts in terms of humor . His most important work is a six-volume story of the Estonian military from 1927 to 1933, cast in the form of a novel, consisting of the novels ... and the soldiers sing [I + II] , men with cords , tender love , the officers and Värska ( 1959–1977), with which he “set a monument to the armed forces of the Republic of Estonia”.

Lindsaar also wrote papers on the Estonian community in exile in Australia and travelogues.

Trivia
