Live and act
His father was a lawyer and a ministerial official, his mother the niece of the poet Carolina Coronado . Ramón studied law, became a lawyer, but never practiced the profession. Instead, he worked as a journalist in the newspapers El Sol , La Voz , Revista de Occidente and El Liberal , where he emerged as an advocate of the new literary currents of the avant-garde . He was "elegant, educated, witty, the personification of the avant-garde and the surrealistic happening, of inexhaustible imagination and creativity."
Gómez de la Serna wrote around 100 works in a wide variety of literary forms and genres : novels , dramas , essays , biographies . In addition, he invented an independent genre of literature, the Greguerías , which he defined as follows: humor + metaphor = Greguería. He wrote thousands of these aphorism-like short texts.
He was a co-founder of the Spanish PEN and secretary of the Ateneo de Madrid cultural club . The literary regulars' table he founded in the Café Pombo in Madrid was well known.
From 1908 he was in a relationship with the writer Carmen de Burgos (1867-1936), known by the stage name Colombine . In 1931 he married the Argentine writer of Russian descent Luisa Sofovich . In 1933 he traveled to Buenos Aires and did not return to Spain because of the civil war . In 1963 he died in Buenos Aires. His body was transferred to Madrid and buried in the Panteón de Hombres Ilustres .
