Eino Leino [ ˈɛinɔ ˈlɛinɔ ] (actually Armas Eino Leopold Lönnbohm ; born July 6, 1878 in Paltamo , † January 10, 1926 in Tuusula ) was a Finnish writer.

Life

Leino gave up his studies in Helsinki in 1895 and became a literary critic and columnist for various Finnish newspapers. Between 1909 and 1910, Leino traveled through Germany, Italy and Sweden. His first lyrical anthologies were inspired by Heinrich Heine and Johan Ludvig Runeberg . His poetry was also close to the Kalevala .

Under the influence of the works of Gerhart Hauptmann , Maurice Maeterlinck and Gabriele D'Annunzio , Leino was induced to make the Finnish theater the home of pure poetry again. With his work, Leino became one of the most representative personalities of the literary neo-romanticism of Finland. As a lyricist, Leino is now considered a classic that modernity invokes again and again. Leino has also worked extensively as a translator: works by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, Zacharias Topelius , Dante , Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Friedrich Schiller , Jean Racine , Pierre Corneille and Anatole France have been translated by him.

Eino Leino died on January 10, 1926 in Tuusula and was buried in the Hietaniemi cemetery in Helsinki. In his memory is July 6 in Finland Eino Leinon päivä / runon yes suven päivä ( "Eino Leino-day / day of the seal and the summer") since 1992 Flag Day .
