Margus Konnula , pseudonym Contra (born March 22, 1974 in Urvaste ) is an Estonian writer .

Life

Konnula was born in Urvaste in southern Estonia and attended school there and in the neighboring towns of Kuldre and Antsla . After graduating from high school (1992), he did his military service (1993-1994) and from 1994 worked as a postman . Later he was in the upper class postal service. He has been a freelance writer since 1999. From 2004 to 2008 he was an editor at Urvaste's municipal newspaper. He has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1997.

Konnula is primarily a poet and is known for his numerous virtuoso puns and rhymes . There are clear points of contact with Estonian folklore , which the poet also emphasized in his early years through his appearance. For example, he stood in the center aisle of the intercity buses in Estonia and began to recite his poems before selling his self-published poetry tapes. It did not affect the matter that, in the opinion of some critics, the author could not necessarily keep his voice, because the old folk singers could not either.

In the early years he once described his role with a twinkle in his eye - and another play on words - as follows: "I really am poetry crap - crap is fertilizer - which is why criticism stays away from me because I stink. But in truth I am a necessary one Appearance. " He was referring, among other things, to the fact that the established criticism left him on the left and did not take him seriously. At the same time he was very well known and popular through his appearances in the media. As a sample of its innovative rhyme pair is the absurd baskitar / basskitarr , which in Estonian a Baskin ( baskitar ) and a bass guitar ( basskitarr be referred to), led. Since there are short and long consonants in Estonian, the difference (between a single or double s or r ) can actually be heard.

Konnula published his poetry volumes almost exclusively in self-publishing, which he tellingly called Mina ise (I myself). In the meantime over twenty, mostly very narrow, volumes have appeared. Despite his sometimes emphatically alternative appearance, the author belongs to the literary establishment of Estonia. He is a popular reciter and a welcome (listened to) guest in schools and radio shows.
