Mari Vallisoo

Mari Vallisoo (born November 12, 1950 in Sassukvere , rural community Pala , Estonian SSR ; † August 4, 2013 in Tartu ) was an Estonian poet .

life and work

Mari Vallisoo graduated as a programmer at the Tallinn Technikum in 1973 and then worked in Tartu at an institute for computer technology and from 1980 to 1982 at the chair for logic and psychology at the University of Tartu . Since 1983 she was a member of the Estonian Writers' Union and since the same year she has lived as a freelance poet in Tartu.

Vallisoo made her debut in 1979 with the volume Kallid koerad (The Love Dogs) and had since then regularly presented other collections. However, since she lived relatively secluded in Tartu and stayed away from the literary hustle and bustle in general, she was sometimes an insider tip.

Her poetry uses imaginative motifs from folklore - from fairy tales or the Estonian epic Kalevipoeg - and often deals with everyday things from which she derives a philosophical dimension, as the following example shows:

History of our corridor

Suddenly I see clearly -
the tap on the wall of our communal corridor
is completely crooked.
Funny how no one has noticed
that for eighteen years Or no The sink itself is completely crooked on the wall Oh no, the wall itself What should you do there Already expect has almost a century under its belt. In the end, this is also wrong The house is crooked On the earth Oh what The earth is so terribly crooked, especially when you compare it with the splashing faucet in our communal corridor So I compare and compare Until the little one Mari-Liis comes along, humming and hopping, two fingers wet, washing her freckled nose and washing her blue eyes.

So far there are only a few translations in German in the magazine estonia 2/2003 (pp. 43–53, translated by Gisbert Jänicke). Fifteen of her poems have been translated into Dutch in the anthology Woorden in de wind van de Oostzee .

Mari Vallisoo died at the age of 62.
