Andres Ehin (born March 13, 1940 in Tallinn ; † December 10, 2011 ) was an Estonian poet , writer and literary translator .

Life

Andres Ehin's parents came from Russia , but went to German-speaking, Lutheran schools . In 1921 they opted for Estonian citizenship. Estonian, German and Russian were spoken equally at home, and French as a foreign language. Andres Ehin's father became a manager of the tax administration, his mother a translator in the newly established Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

After graduating from high school in Tallinn in 1958, Andres Ehin studied Finno-Ugric languages at the University of Tartu until 1964 . In 1964/65 he taught German in the Selkupic village of Rattas in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District . From 1964 to 1972 he was the editor of various Estonian cultural magazines. Since 1974 he has worked as a freelance author and writer.

In 1975 he married the writer and translator Ly Seppel (* 1943). Their daughter is the poet Kristiina Ehin . Andres Ehin was a member of the CPSU from 1968 to 1989 . After Estonian independence was regained, he politically supported the Estonian Green Movement.

Andres Ehin leaned heavily on surrealism in his poems . In addition, Spanish modernism and expressionism gave his works impulses. Andres Ehin has won numerous Estonian literary prizes, including the 2004 Juhan Liiv Poetry Prize .

German translations

So far, only a few samples of poems by Anderes Ehin have appeared in the magazine estonia . Gisbert Jänicke translated eleven poems for number 2/1996 from the volume teadvus on ussinahk (Consciousness is a snake skin, Tallinn 1995). It is noteworthy, however, that Ehin himself wrote a poem in German for an anthology on the work of Kurt Schwitters : Here he contributed the poem To Anna Dieplatzanweiserin , and in the same volume there are two more poems by Ehin that he wrote originally written in English.
