The Põlva County (Estonian Põlva maakond or Põlvamaa ) is a county (maakond) in Estonia .
geography
Põlvamaa is located in the southeast of the country in a hilly terminal moraine landscape and is characterized by agriculture. There are more than 130 lakes in the county, of which Meelva järv is the largest with 78.7 hectares.
Põlva County borders on Tartumaa to the north, Valgamaa to the west and Võrumaa to the south . In the east, the course of the common border with Russia is disputed. Some villages, such as Lutepää and Saatse, can only be reached via roads that also cross Russian territory.

The district administration ( maakonnavalitsus ) is headed by a governor ( maavanem ) who is appointed by the Estonian government for a period of five years.

Since the municipal reform in 2017, the district has included three rural municipalities: Põlva , Räpina and Kanepi .
Until 2017, the district consisted of 13 rural communities ( vallad ).
