Origin of name and coat of arms
Kanepi is said to be derived from Kanep , the Estonian word for hemp . The present Kanepi municipality was founded in July 2017 through the merger of three previously separate areas. As a result, residents were given the opportunity to vote on a new symbol for the parish union. 12,000 out of 15,000 people are said to have voted for a design based on a stylized white hemp leaf on an otherwise uniformly green shield . A corresponding coat of arms is also used on the municipality's website.
