Võõpsu (German Wöbs ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in southeast Estonia . It belongs to the Setomaa rural community in Võru County ( Mikitamäe in Põlva County until 2017 ).

Population and location

The village has 85 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located on the fish-rich Võhandu River . The three-kilometer stretch from Võõpsu to the mouth of Lake Peipus is still navigable today.

history

The village was first mentioned in Russian sources under the name Wibowsk in 1428 . But he's probably a lot older. Later a small port developed on the important traffic artery between Räpina and Lake Peipus. It was in operation until the 1950s. In 1895 and 1915, the place was badly affected by large fires that destroyed numerous houses and farms.

Village chapel

A first Orthodox chapel ( Setuce in tsässon ) was probably built around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries in honor of St. Nicholas in Võõpsu. Today's wooden church dates back to 1710 according to dendrochronological studies. It was extensively renovated in 2010. An old cemetery is attached to the chapel, where funerals took place until the mid-19th century.
