Beresje is a village ( Estonian küla ) in southeast Estonia . It belongs to the Setomaa rural community in Võru County ( Mikitamäe in Põlva County until 2017 ).

Population and location

The typical fishing village ( Binnenstint ) with its old cemetery has 38 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).

It is located on a small headland (Kivinõna neem) , directly on Lake Peipus . The 17.5 hectare lake Umbjärv is located southwest of the village center .

Numerous Old Believers belong to the population of Beresje .

History and etymology

The place was first mentioned in 1582.

The name probably comes from the Russian word for birch , Берёза .
