Merivälja
Merivälja is a municipality ( Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn . It is one of the districts of the Pirita district . Merivälja has almost 3,000 inhabitants (as of 2008).
Location, history, architecture
Merivälja is located east of Tallinn city center. The municipality borders on the Tallinn Bay. In the northeast it forms the city boundary between Tallinn and the rural municipality Viimsi .
The district was founded in 1924 by the garden city society Saku . Previously, the area belonged to the pastureland of Viimsi estate. Merivälja was the second garden city in the Tallinn area after Nõmme .
The homes were mostly planned in the style of functionalism . The cityscape is still dominated by residential buildings near the Baltic Sea beach. In 1945 Merivälja was annexed to the city of Tallinn. After the Second World War , the larger plots were divided. There were smaller houses with mostly high gables . In the 1980s, newer, more richly decorated buildings in postmodernist style were added. Now larger villas were also built.
Personalities
The Estonian opera singer Alfred Sällik (1890–1943) lived in the district for a time .
