The Rocca al Mare (red) district in the Haabersti (yellow) district of Tallinn

Rocca al Mare is one of the twelve districts ( Estonian asum ) of the Tallinn district of Haabersti . It is located seven kilometers west of the city center of the Estonian capital.

Description and history

Rocca al Mare is located directly on the Kopli Bay ( Kopli laht ). The district is the only one of the Tallinn city districts that has no permanent residents (as of May 1, 2010).

The history of Rocca al Mares began in 1863 when the Baltic German mayor of Tallinn, Baron Arthur Girard de Soucanton (1813–1884), had a summer house built in 1863. The Italian friend named the property Rocca al Mare after a rock off the coast of the Baltic Sea . He had an extensive park laid out around his summer villa.

Estonian Open Air Museum

From May 1957, the Tallinn city council had a large open-air museum for Estonian rural culture built in Rocca al Mare. In 1964 the Estonian Open Air Museum ( Estonian Eesti Vabaõhumuuseum ) was officially opened. Today it has an area of 84 hectares. The open-air museum presents old Estonian manors, farmhouses, fishing shelters and windmills from all regions of Estonia. The 79 buildings show everyday rural life and the Estonian rural culture from 1750 to the beginning of the 20th century with numerous equipment and inventory.

The open-air museum is divided into four parts: West Estonia ( Lääne-Eesti ), North Estonia ( Põhja-Eesti ), the Estonian Islands ( saared ) and South Estonia ( Lõuna-Eesti ). The main attractions are the Sassi-Jaani courtyard with the typical Estonian row apartment ( rehielamu ) from 1766/67, several historic windmills , the fisherman's farm in Aarte from the end of the 19th century and the Kõlu tavern ( Kõlu kõrts , 1842–46).

In addition to many other originally preserved houses and some exhibition rooms, a wooden chapel from Sutlepa ( Sutlepa kabel ), a school ( Kuie koolimaja , 1887), traditional Estonian country swings ( kiigud ), smoke saunas and a syringe house ( pritsikuur , 1928) are on display.

In the summer there are regular tours and events in the open-air museum.
