history

Until the middle of the 19th century, the area was mainly meadow and pasture land in the Kristiina district. Some summer houses were also built. Only around 1860 did a denser development grow. With the construction of the train station in 1869/70, population growth increased steadily on both sides of the railroad tracks, which increased with the establishment of factories (such as the R. Mayer-Werke AG ).

The district received its current name in the 1920s.
