Antoine Rivet de La Grange (* 1683 in Confolens , † 1749 in Le Mans ) was a French Benedictine and literary historian.

life and work

Dom Rivet was a Mauriner and Jansenist. He opposed the papal bull Unigenitus Dei filius of 1713, which condemned Jansenism as heresy , and was therefore sent by the order to the Abbey of Saint Vincent in Le Mans. There he published the first nine volumes (1733 to 1750) of the Histoire littéraire de la France , a huge, to this day unfinished enterprise, whose 43rd volume from 2005 does not go beyond the 14th century. Dom Rivet dealt with the period up to 1100 and the beginning of the 12th century, that is, almost exclusively Latin literature , especially from monasteries.

The Histoire littéraire de la France

His confreres Dom Charles Clémencet and Dom François Clément continued the company with volumes 10-12 (1756-1763) until 1150. It was resumed under Napoleon with the publication of volumes 13-19 (1814-1838), which extended to 1285 but still mainly dealt with Latin literature. It was only in the later volumes 20 to 23 (1842 to 1856), which extended to 1300, that old French literature was also described, pioneered by Paulin Paris , among others . In the meantime, the company managed by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres , which already comprises more than 25,000 pages, has deviated from the strict chronology and now collects monographs from the entire processing time, the end of which was set at 1630. Furthermore, every author is considered worthy of consideration who has written as French, on French soil or with significant reference to France, whether in French or another language.
