François Clément
François Clément (* 1714 in Bèze (Côte-d'Or) ; † 29. March 1793 in Paris ) was a French Benedictine Monk of Maurists -Kongregation, chronicler and historian.
Life
François Clément continues the Histoire littéraire de la France des Antoine Rivet de La Grange († 1749) (11th and 12th volumes), as well as the Recueil des Historiens des Gaules et de la France (RHGF) by Martin Bouquet († 1754) .
He also looked through and completed the L'Art de vérifier les dates après J.-C. published by Charles Clémencet in 1750. , the second edition of which he published in a single folio volume in 1770 . Dissatisfied with this work, he revised it completely and brought it to three folio volumes, which appeared in 1783, 1784 and 1787. This work, which was still authoritative in chronology in the 19th century, is one of the most beautiful monuments of the 18th century according to the Bouillet dictionary . It was reprinted in 18 volumes by Nicolas Viton de Saint-Allais in 1818 and continued in the 19th century by Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Jullien de Courcelles and the Marquis Fortia d'Urban (15 octave volumes, 1821-1833).
Dom Clément wrote a similar work for pre-Christian times ( l'Art de vérifier les dates avant J.-C. ) when he was struck by a stroke . This second work was published in 1820, five octave volumes; it is less appreciated than the previous one.
Dom Clément was associated with the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres in 1785 .
