The Sibulaküla (red) district in the Kesklinn (yellow) district of Tallinn

Sibulaküla (in German "onion village ") is a district ( Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn . It is located in the Kesklinn district ("inner city").

Description and history

Sibulaküla has 2,033 inhabitants (as of May 1, 2010).

The district was almost completely destroyed in the devastating attack by the Soviet Air Force on Tallinn on March 9-10, 1944. During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, new buildings in line with the socialist town planning of Tallinn were erected on the areas that became vacant.

In Sibulaküla the seat of the Communist Party of Estonia (today the main building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia) and the Hotel Olümpia were built . The reason for building the hotel were the Olympic sailing competitions at the 1980 Summer Games , which were held in Tallinn.
