The municipality of Pirita ( Estonian Pirita asum ) is located in the northeast of the Estonian capital Tallinn . It belongs to the Pirita district of the same name ( Pirita linnaosa ).

The municipality has 911 inhabitants (as of May 1, 2010). It is located at the mouth of the Pirita River in the Baltic Sea . The sandy beaches of Pirita attract numerous visitors in summer.

In the city district of Pirita are the ruins of the former medieval Pirita Monastery. In 2001, a new Catholic nunnery was built in the immediate vicinity.

Next to it is the (new) cemetery of Pirita. A limestone wall covers an area of ​​0.8 hectares. The cemetery was inaugurated at the end of the 19th century. The old cemetery of Pirita was within the medieval monastery walls.

The Tallinn sailing center ( Tallinna Olümpiapurjespordikeskus ) and a marina are located in Pirita . There, in 1980 the sailing competitions were Olympic Games of Moscow held. There are other sports facilities in Pirita, including the Tallinn Velodrome , which is also used as a football stadium.
