Kivimäe (in German "Steinberg") is a district ( Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn . It is located in the Nõmme district .

Description and history

The city district has 4,710 inhabitants (as of May 1, 2010). Its area is 2.2 square kilometers.

The northern and southern parts of the district in particular are largely natural. A four hectare forest area forms the green lung of Kivimäes. In the south begins the 9 km² large moor of Pääsküla ( Pääsküla raba ) with its river of the same name ( Pääsküla jõgi ).

The name of the district (translated "Steinberg") came about due to the stony terrain during the work on the railway line between Tallinn and Paldiski (1869/70). The stop was put into operation in 1924. The station building was erected in 1932. Five years later, a new station building was completed based on a project by the Estonian architect Hendrik Otlood . The building has served as a kindergarten since 2003.

Between 1913 and 1916 the tsarist military had numerous fortifications built in Kivimäe. Some ruins of them can still be seen today. The area, which was sparsely populated until the beginning of the 20th century, with its good air, turned out to be particularly suitable for hospitals and nursing homes after Estonian independence was declared in 1918. Its construction began in 1925. These include a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients, which was in operation until 2001 (1926, architect Erich Jacoby ), and a military hospital (1938). The historic Kivimäe fire station was completed in 1930.

The renowned Tallinn Music High School ( Tallinna Muusikakeskkool ) has been located in Kivimäe since the 1970s, where numerous later musicians and composers received their training. Well-known former students are Urmas Sisask , Lepo Sumera , Helena Tulve and Tõnu Kaljuste .

A memorial stone in front of his former home commemorates the Estonian actor and director Voldemar Panso (1920–1977), who spent a large part of his life in Kivimäe.
