Tatari (in German "Tatarisches [district]") is a district ( Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn . It is located in the Kesklinn district ("inner city").

Description and history

Tatari has 1,781 inhabitants (as of May 1, 2010).

Tatari is home to the Kosmos cinema , the Estonian Music and Theater Academy , the US Embassy in Estonia and the Liivalaia Gümnaasium .

The district got its name from Tatari Street, which runs through the district. After the Russian conquest of Estonia in the 18th century, the tsarist authorities set up a camp for the Tatars stationed in Tallinn , later known as the Tatar Slobode .
