Iru is a district ( Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn . The district is located in the Pirita district .

Iru is located on the eastern bank of the Pirita River ( Pirita jõgi ) on the Tallinn city limits. The northern part of the independent village of Iru was incorporated into the city of Tallinn in 1975. The city district has only 33 inhabitants (as of May 1, 2010).

Before the Christianization of Estonia, there was a fortified settlement of the pagan Estonians on a 15 meter high hill . The beginnings of settlement go back to the 2nd to 3rd millennium BC. The fortifications date from the 8th to the 5th century BC. The oldest iron artifacts on Estonian soil were also found there. The settlement probably burned down in the 11th century AD.
