It is named after the Thuringian author Harald Gerlach .

Foundation, endowment

The Thuringian Literature Scholarship Harald Gerlach was brought into being on the basis of a public initiative by the writer Ingo Schulze . Schulze was awarded the Thuringian Literature Prize in 2007. When accepting the award, he criticized in his acceptance speech that it was not the Free State of Thuringia , but an energy company that sponsored the award. He suggested strengthening the Free State's literary funding by creating a working grant for authors from budget funds, for which he wanted to make his prize money available - as start-up funding, so to speak. The state government finally accepted this proposal and, together with the Thuringian Literary Society, launched the grant in 2008. The 6,000 euros donated by Schulze went into the first three grants to be awarded.

Allocation modalities

The Thuringian Literature Scholarship Harald Gerlach is intended to give authors the opportunity to work intensively on a current project over a longer period of time. It is awarded for a maximum of one year and is endowed with 1,000 euros per month. Authors can apply with a writing project in the fields of prose, poetry or drama. The application must have a reference to Thuringia, which is given either by the fact that the applicants come from there, live in Thuringia or that their writing project deals with the content. An independent jury will decide on the award of the scholarship.
