Literature grant

A literary scholarship is a scholarship , that is, a financial contribution that is given to authors as a grant . The focus here is on promoting literature , i.e. giving writers the opportunity to devote themselves to the creation of literary works or a specific literary work for a period of time without financial worries.

Literature scholarships are usually awarded by public bodies such as governments, ministries of culture or municipal administrations, but in some cases also by private organizations such as the Berlin Literary Colloquium . Cities and municipalities in particular often award literary grants in the form of residence grants (keyword city ​​clerk ).

Literature scholarships are usually awarded through an application process. The authors must submit application material, which will be judged by a jury , in order to award the scholarship according to the requirements placed on them . The application material usually consists of personal data, information on previous publications , a description of the literary project to be funded and sample texts.

Scholarship types

Depending on the sponsor, different literary genres or genres (poetry / literature) can be funded. Travel grants are linked to the implementation of a trip intended to research and develop literary texts.

Public bodies, especially ministries of culture, often provide a whole range of different literary grants.
