Elron is the brand name under which the Estonian state railway company AS Eesti Liinirongid operates.

history

The company was founded in 1998 as Elektriraudtee ( Estonian for Electric Railway), which operated the railway in and around Tallinn . The company was understood as the Tallinn S-Bahn because it mainly transported passengers from and into Tallinn. It was partly owned by Eesti Raudtee until the company's shares were completely taken over by the Estonian state in November 2000.

In 2012, the entire fleet of vehicles began to be replaced. The outdated Latvian electric multiple units were replaced by new Stadler Flirt units. In addition , similar multiple units with diesel units were put into service as a replacement for the Edelaraudtee diesel multiple units (until then responsible for inner-Estonian passenger traffic outside the Tallinn area). Both versions of the Stadler Flirt initially bore the label Elektriraudtee . Since October 2013, the company has been trading as AS Eesti Liinirongid with the brand name Elron and has exclusive rights for all national passenger transport in Estonia until 2023.

Line network

The Elektriraudtee network initially consisted of a line with two branches that was 132 km long. The electrified main line runs from Aegviidu to Keila via the Tallinn Baltic Railway Station ( Balti jaam ), which is in the middle of the line. In Keila, the main line is divided into a line to Paldiski via Klooga and one to Riisipere (extended to Turba in 2019). In Klooga a short distance branches off to the beach (Klooga edge).

All Estonian passenger routes, including those on which diesel trains are used, have been operated by Elron since 2014 .

In the early days of the company, electric railcars of the ER2 series from the Latvian manufacturer Rīgas Vagonbūves Rūpnīca (RVR) were initially used, which had been taken over from the Soviet era and partially modernized. These electric multiple units were replaced by new Stadler Flirt units from 2012 . In addition, diesel-electric multiple units of the same type were put into service to replace the DR1 diesel multiple units for the non-electrified routes .

Currently, these electric and diesel-electric low-floor multiple units are used exclusively . In detail these are:
